The cryptocurrency industry may face major regulatory hurdles following the Democrats’ victory in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections.

Longtime cryptocurrency critic Elizabeth Warren is set to lead one of the Senate’s most powerful committees, according to a Nov. 5 report by The Wall Street Journal.

The WSJ report by Corrie Driebusch and Dylan Tokar described Warren’s 20-year record of clashing with Wall Street, holding bankers accountable, delving into private equity and examining big financial firms.

Chairing the Senate Banking Committee would also give Warren more power to conduct investigations and issue subpoenas.

The news means greater oversight in Congress and potentially more scrutiny of the cryptocurrency industry, a sector that has often clashed with Warren over financial regulation. It could lead to even more hurdles for industry-friendly laws.

Elizabeth Warren’s long history of anti-crypto criticism

Warren is among the most vocal critics of the cryptocurrency sector in Washington.

Back in March 2023, her reelection campaign famously endorsed her “anti-crypto army” campaign, something cryptocurrency proponents took great offense to.

Warren has often tied cryptocurrency to money laundering, ransomware, sanctions busting, and other financial crimes.

Recently, Warren has opposed Republicans’ push for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. She says the bill lacks sufficient consumer protections and financial crime safeguards.

In a Sept. 15 Senate speech, she argued that the U.S. should regulate crypto but opposed crypto bills designed to benefit the industry.

Should Warren take over the Banking Committee in January 2027, she will have much more say in which crypto proposals move forward and which industry executives are grilled.

It is not a done deal yet.
