Two of the most influential footballers of the past decade are about to collide on the world’s biggest stage. Kevin De Bruyne’s Belgium will face Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in a FIFA World Cup group-stage opener on June 15, 2026, at Lumen Field in Seattle.
De Bruyne and Salah defined the Manchester City-Liverpool battle that dominated English football through the late 2010s and early 2020s. Both players have acknowledged the matchup publicly, reflecting on a decade spent trying to outdo each other in the Premier League.
Major international football tournaments have a well-documented track record of juicing activity in sports-adjacent crypto ecosystems. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar provided the clearest example yet.

Chiliz, the blockchain infrastructure behind the Socios.com fan engagement platform, saw its native token CHZ surge roughly 380% during the 2022 World Cup cycle. The platform hosts fan tokens for dozens of major football clubs, enabling holders to participate in polls, access exclusive content, and engage with their teams through tokenized voting rights.
Manchester City launched an official fan token, $CITY, on the Chiliz ecosystem. Liverpool has engaged with fans through similar mechanisms on Socios.com. Chiliz has also executed supply-burn campaigns timed around World Cup events, a deflationary mechanic designed to reduce circulating token supply.
Beyond fan tokens, the Belgium-Egypt match is already generating activity on prediction market platforms. Both Limitless.exchange and Coinbase have made match outcome markets available involving Salah and De Bruyne, allowing users to take positions on specific game results.
The 2026 World Cup will be the first hosted across the US, Canada, and Mexico, with an expanded format accommodating 48 teams. That geographic footprint matters for crypto adoption narratives because the US market represents the largest pool of potential new users for platforms like Socios.com and Limitless.exchange.
Fan tokens remain thinly traded relative to major crypto assets, making them susceptible to sharp drawdowns when narratives fade. Prediction market platforms face ongoing regulatory scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions. The 2022 World Cup cycle showed that Chiliz and related fan tokens can produce significant short-term price appreciation, but those same tokens also gave back substantial gains after the tournament ended.
