However, the US-Iran deal is facing turbulence after Iran re-imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. The US and Iran in Switzerland have been put under pressure again with reports of increased conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. After postponing the US-Iran meeting on June 19, Iran has confirmed it will hold talks with U.S. officials later today in Switzerland. Representatives from Qatar and Pakistan, who are acting as mediators, will also be part of the talks.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said that the day will begin with three separate meetings with the Iranian, Pakistani and Qatari teams. It will be followed by a four-party meeting consisting of the Iranian delegation, the US delegation, Qatar and Pakistan.
The talks around the US-Iran deal were already under geopolitical pressure owing to the brunt on the worldwide economy. With the deepening conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, there is now another layer of urgency.
On Sunday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who is also a member of the U.S. delegation, reached Switzerland for the talks. His appearance underscores Washington’s effort to advance the US-Iran deal process in the face of increased instability in the region.
Pakistan To Mediate Efforts Amid Strait of Hormuz Closure
The talks are part of an effort by both sides to ease tension after months of standoff. However, the issue remains since Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz again, which is a vital energy choke point in the world.
Pakistan has also stepped up its diplomatic engagement in the effort on the US-Iran deal. For context, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had come to Zurich before the meetings. He is expected to be with Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The situation in Lebanon is becoming a major problem for diplomats in Switzerland as their casualties continue to mount and fighting across the border is getting more serious. The emergency session may set the tone for the wider US-Iran nuclear talks. Moreover, negotiators are trying to prevent the situation from perpetuating a second crisis across the region.
