Real Madrid is reportedly moving to terminate the contract of left-back Ferland Mendy, a player the club signed from Lyon back in 2019 for an initial fee of €48 million. What was once a marquee defensive signing now looks like a sunk cost the club is ready to write off entirely.

Mendy arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu with serious expectations attached to his price tag. For a while, the club’s faith seemed justified, enough so that they extended his deal through 2027.
But football moves fast. By June 2026, as Mendy entered his 31st year, reports surfaced that the defender had been deemed surplus to requirements. Limited playing time in recent seasons made it clear the relationship had run its course.
Rather than pursuing a traditional transfer, where Real Madrid might recoup some of that initial investment, the club is now reportedly considering outright contract termination. Social media discussions in late July 2026 intensified these rumors, suggesting the club would rather absorb the remaining salary obligations and move on than wait for a buyer who may never come.
