Younger Americans increasingly treat sports betting as a serious element in their wealth-building efforts, per a survey conducted by the personal finance platform Betterment.
A survey reveals that 26% of Gen Z investors view it as an ongoing component of their financial plans, far exceeding rates among millennials at 14%, Gen X at 6% and baby boomers at 1%, reports AdvisorHub.
More than half of these young investors have moved money originally set aside for stocks into betting over the past year.
Fourteen percent make such shifts multiple times each month.
Only one-third of Gen Z respondents skip sports betting altogether, compared with 63% of all investors surveyed.
The legal sports betting sector has expanded into a nearly 17 billion dollar industry that now competes directly with traditional investing for younger adults’ dollars.
Rising living costs make conventional milestones like homeownership seem distant, prompting some to seek faster gains through high-risk options.
One participant earned roughly 2,500 dollars from bets this year and used winnings to cover a vacation linked to a favorite hockey team.
Betterment’s chief executive, Sarah Levy, warns that such products encourage quick scores instead of long-term growth.
“When a prediction market or sportsbook starts to feel like a retirement strategy, we have a problem. These products are designed to keep people seeking the next quick score, not to help them build toward the next decade.”
Industry leaders stress that betting should remain entertainment only and never involve essential funds.
