Fenerbahce hosts Lyon in Champions League qualifier with Lukaku’s fitness in doubt

The Turkish giants have assembled a squad that reads like a fantasy football roster, but their marquee summer signing may watch from the sidelines as they chase Champions League qualification against Lyon.

Fenerbahce welcome Olympique Lyonnais to Istanbul’s Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Tuesday evening for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off round. The match is scheduled for August 18, 2026, at 20:00 local time, with the second leg set for August 26 in France.
The problem: their latest and arguably most high-profile addition, Romelu Lukaku, is unlikely to feature. The 33-year-old Belgian striker, who arrived from Napoli for a reported fee of around €6 million plus bonuses, sat out Saturday’s 2-1 league defeat to Genclerbirligi due to fitness concerns. Being registered for European competition and being ready to play in it are, as it turns out, two different things.

Even without Lukaku on the pitch, Fenerbahce’s squad includes Mason Greenwood, Nathan Ake, Ederson, N’Golo Kante, and Marco Asensio.
Lukaku’s connection to Turkey runs deeper than a transfer announcement. His father played for Genclerbirligi in the 1990s, and the striker spent part of his childhood in the country. “This beautiful country is a second home to me,” he said last week upon completing his move.
Fenerbahce arrived at this stage after dispatching Sturm Graz in the previous qualifying round. Lyon, meanwhile, has not featured in the Champions League group phase for several seasons and has made returning to that stage a stated priority.
The revamped Champions League format has raised the financial and competitive stakes of qualification. Reaching the expanded league phase would guarantee Fenerbahce a minimum of eight group-stage matches against elite opposition. Missing out means dropping into the Europa League.
