CoinEx will wind down its crypto exchange beginning September 15 and fully cease operations on December 22 amid a prolonged market downturn that has reduced trading activity and pressured industry businesses.

In a statement issued on Sept. 14, the company said the decision was made due to weaker market conditions, declining industry trading activity and liquidity, higher regulatory requirements, and rising compliance and operational costs.

CoinEx maintains reserves above 100% and that users can withdraw their assets in full during the wind-down period, the exchange stated.

As noted, the platform will stop accepting new registrations and new subscriptions or orders for fiat, margin trading, loans, Earn, staking and strategic trading on September 15. Non-spot services will end on September 22, while spot trading will cease on September 29.

CoinEx will also shut down CoinEx Smart Chain and OneSwap and repurchase all remaining CET in user accounts at 0.005 USDT per CET.

The exchange added that withdrawal services will remain open through December 22 despite the shutdown of other services and urged users to withdraw early. After the deadline, unwithdrawn USDT will be moved into independent custody and incur a monthly custody fee equal to 5% of the original asset balance.

CoinEx said its Wallet and Vault products are separate from the exchange and will remain operational.

CoinEx’s planned closure will bring its nine-year operating history to an end. Founded in December 2017 by Haipo Yang, an early Bitcoin investor and ViaBTC Pool founder, the Seychelles-based exchange is part of a crypto ecosystem that includes the ViaBTC mining pool, CoinEx Smart Chain and related wallet and infrastructure services.

Its exit comes as several crypto companies wind down their operations. BitMEX, co-founded by Arthur Hayes, will shut down by the end of this month following 11 years of operations.
