China completes first outbound digital yuan payment to Malaysia

A 43,000 yuan durian shipment just became the opening salvo in Beijing’s campaign to build a cross-border payments network outside SWIFT.

China just sent its first digital yuan payment across a border, and the cargo in question was durian. The spiky, notoriously pungent fruit beloved across Southeast Asia is now a footnote in monetary history, because on August 1, a payment of 43,000 yuan (roughly $6,360) settled between China Construction Bank branches in Xiamen, China, and Labuan, Malaysia, in about 30 minutes.
No SWIFT. No intermediary banks skimming fees. No currency conversion costs. Just a direct bank-to-bank ledger transfer using China’s central bank digital currency, the e-CNY.
A Malaysian importer paid for a shipment of fresh durian directly in e-CNY. The transaction moved through CCB’s internal network, connecting its Xiamen branch on the Chinese side with its Labuan branch in Malaysia.

The 30-minute settlement window is the headline stat here. Traditional cross-border payments through correspondent banking networks can take anywhere from one to five business days, depending on how many intermediaries are involved and how many compliance checks the transaction triggers along the way.
China has been building toward this moment for years. Domestic trials of the e-CNY began back in 2019 and 2020, rolling out in selected cities and across specific platforms. Shenzhen, Suzhou, and Chengdu were early testing grounds. Digital yuan red envelopes were distributed to consumers. Merchants were onboarded.
Beijing wants to build a clearing network for international trade that doesn’t route through SWIFT, the Belgium-based messaging system that underpins the vast majority of international bank transfers. When the US and its allies froze Russia out of SWIFT after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, it demonstrated just how much geopolitical power is baked into the plumbing of global finance.
The durian payment to Malaysia is a proof of concept. It shows that the e-CNY can function as a settlement instrument in real cross-border trade, not just in sandboxed pilot programs or theoretical white papers. Southeast Asia is where China is concentrating its cross-border e-CNY efforts, and for good reason. The region’s trade ties with China are deep, and several ASEAN countries are developing their own CBDC initiatives.
No decentralized protocols were involved here. No Bitcoin, no stablecoins, no DeFi rails. This was a centralized digital currency issued by the People’s Bank of China, moving through a state-owned bank’s internal ledger.
Every cross-border transaction that settles in e-CNY instead of dollars is a marginal reduction in dollar demand. One durian shipment doesn’t move the needle. Thousands of commodity trades, infrastructure project payments, and bilateral trade settlements across the Belt and Road footprint start to become a different conversation entirely.
Centralized digital currencies give issuing governments unprecedented visibility into transaction flows. For businesses operating in jurisdictions where e-CNY becomes a preferred settlement currency, that means accepting a level of surveillance that may create compliance and strategic concerns.
