Hyperliquid’s move into regulated investment products is gaining another piece of institutional infrastructure.
Grayscale has added BitGo Bank & Trust as an additional custodian for the Grayscale Hyperliquid Staking ETF, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Under the arrangement, BitGo will provide custody and safekeeping services for a portion of the trust’s HYPE holdings.
At first glance, adding another custodian may look like a relatively technical fund update.
It is more interesting when viewed in the context of where HYPE came from.
Hyperliquid grew as a crypto-native trading ecosystem, with its token closely tied to a decentralized perpetual futures platform rather than a conventional financial company.
The existence of a publicly accessible staking ETF built around HYPE represents a very different stage of market development.
Custody arrangements are a critical part of that transition.
Exchange-traded crypto products need institutional systems for holding their underlying assets, managing operational risks and satisfying the requirements attached to public securities.
Those requirements become more complicated when a fund does more than passively hold a token.
A staking product must also account for how assets interact with network validation, how rewards are treated and how liquidity is maintained while some holdings may be committed to staking activity.
Adding an additional regulated custodian can give a sponsor greater operational flexibility and reduce dependence on a single custody provider.
Grayscale has been building similar structures across a widening range of crypto assets as the ETF market moves well beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.
That expansion is changing what counts as institutional crypto infrastructure.
Several years ago, the challenge was simply finding a regulated custodian willing and able to hold Bitcoin.
The market is now constructing custody, staking and fund-administration systems around increasingly specialized proof-of-stake assets.
Hyperliquid is one of the clearest examples of that evolution.
HYPE remains closely associated with a trading ecosystem born entirely on-chain, yet the asset is now being fitted into the same legal and operational machinery used for exchange-traded investment products.
BitGo’s addition does not change the investment case for HYPE by itself.
But it does show how quickly the institutional wrapper around major crypto assets continues to develop.
