According to a Monday report by the Mainichi, the English version of one of Japan’s largest news outlets, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the country’s highly popular leader, has denied being associated with a recently launched cryptocurrency token that was named after her.

The cryptocurrency, which has been dubbed “Sanae Token,” has made it clear that she was not aware of the token’s existence during her appearance in the lower house of the National Diet of Japan.

Countless tokens named after prominent figures are not going to surprise or impress anyone, given the process of creating your own cryptocurrency requires very little effort. What is peculiar about this specific cryptocurrency is that it has links to Tsuyoshi Kinoshita, Takaichi’s chief public secretary.

The token was reportedly developed by people connected to businessman Ken Matsui, and Kinoshita acknowledged that she actually engaged in communications with business operators connected to Matsui. Kinoshita thought that the term actually referred to app points instead of an actual cryptocurrency, according to his statement.

Hence, the controversy centers around whether or not the PM’s secretary knowingly interacted with the crypto project.

Takaichi’s crypto stance

Takaichi has generally supported the development of Japan’s Web3 and blockchain. Her conservative government’s crypto policy is aimed at promoting tokenization and other initiatives related to crypto. At the same time, the country’s government has also strengthened safeguards against fraud and unauthorized token issuance.
