Lido confirmed MetaMask Staking infrastructure was compromised, though MetaMask says it has found no immediate threat to wallets. Continue reading at DailyCoin.
MetaMask is exiting Ethereum validators after a staking infrastructure security incident. No immediate threat to MetaMask wallets has been identified, the company says. Affected validators are expected to leave the active set by October 7. MetaMask disclosed a security incident on September 30, affecting part of its infrastructure and prompting the company to begin exiting Ethereum validators operated through its staking service. MetaMask says it has identified no immediate threat to users’ MetaMask wallets, while the scope and cause of the incident remain under investigation. Lido, whose protocol includes Ethereum validators operated by MetaMask Staking, separately confirmed that the MetaMask Staking infrastructure was compromised. What MetaMask Has Disclosed So Far According to MetaMask’s user update and its post on X, the affected area appears to be its staking infrastructure, not the wallet software or private-key system itself. https://twitter.com/MetaMask/status/2105442300335620460 As a precaution, MetaMask is shutting down and exiting the affected Ethereum validators used in its non-custodial staking operation. MetaMask reminds users that it does not hold the withdrawal keys for clients’ staked ETH. “At this time, we have identified no immediate threat to MetaMask wallets,” the company notes. Lido Confirms the MetaMask Incident Lido, a decentralized liquid staking protocol for Ethereum, separately confirmed that MetaMask Staking infrastructure was compromised. Lido said MetaMask has taken steps to protect client assets associated with its operated Ethereum validators. According to Lido’s security disclosure, MetaMask Staking is exiting its Ethereum validators operated through the Lido protocol. Lido said these steps “will likely incur foregone rewards as well as possible downtime penalties.” It expects the affected validators to have exited the active validator set by October 7, 2026. What Remains Unclear MetaMask has not said what was compromised or how the attacker gained access. It has also not disclosed how many validators or how much ETH may be affected, or whether any data was accessed. The investigation is ongoing with outside security advisers. The sources reviewed list no specific actions for users. MetaMask’s official update page is the place to watch for further guidance as the investigation develops. Why This Matters The key issue is not the validator exits themselves, but what was compromised and whether the incident extends beyond MetaMask’s staking infrastructure. MetaMask says it has identified no immediate threat to wallets, but has not disclosed the attack vector, the systems affected, or whether any data or assets were accessed. Until those questions are answered, the scope of the incident remains unclear.
