When it comes to picking favorites, retail investors aren’t being subtle. Over the past year, individual investors have accumulated a staggering $27 billion in net purchases of Nvidia stock, making it the undisputed leader among the so-called Magnificent 7 group of mega-cap tech companies.
That $27B figure, tracked by Vanda Research, dwarfs the retail inflows into Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Tesla over the same period.
Vanda Research, which specializes in tracking US retail equity flows and is widely used by institutional investors to gauge market positioning, has consistently flagged Nvidia as what it calls the “retail king.” The firm has documented multi-hundred-million-dollar single-day net inflows into the stock, with aggregate purchases stacking up quarter after quarter.

At various points, Nvidia’s weight in typical retail investor portfolios exceeded 10%.
The Magnificent 7 collectively dominate retail trading activity, but the gap between Nvidia and its peers in terms of net retail inflows has been pronounced. While Apple and Microsoft remain staples of individual portfolios, neither has attracted the same magnitude of fresh capital that Nvidia continues to pull in.
The retail love affair hasn’t been entirely monogamous. Vanda Research has noted periodic rotations in retail capital toward other names, with Tesla being the most notable beneficiary during certain stretches.
But those rotations have been temporary. When you zoom out across the full trailing year, Nvidia’s cumulative lead is commanding. The $27 billion in net purchases represents sustained conviction rather than a single buying frenzy.
Institutional investors actively monitor retail flow data from platforms like VandaTrack to understand market positioning and anticipate volatility in high-profile stocks.
