TikTok has agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million to resolve claims that its short-form video platform was designed with addictive features that harmed young users and misled the public about safety.
The settlement requires a two-hour daily time limit for underage users, parental controls, productive pauses after 15 minutes of use, overnight access restrictions from midnight to 6 a.m., robust age verification, a ban on cosmetic filters for teens and a default non-personalized feed.
Alabama could receive up to $300 million total if certain conditions are met, with the minimum payment due within 45 days.
The agreement ends a case that had been set for trial and marks the first state-level settlement of its kind, applying only to Alabama users.
Attorney General Steve Marshall says the deal gives parents real control over children’s time on the app.
“This is a great day for Alabama parents. Tonight, they can rest easier knowing real protections are in place to shield their children from the dangers of social media addiction. TikTok has agreed to give parents real control over what their kids see and how much time they spend on the app. We’ve said from day one that our number one goal was to stand up for Alabamians when they are being harmed, and today, we did exactly that.”
TikTok says the deal builds on its commitment to enhance safety tools for teens.
The company reached a separate $400 million settlement with the Department of Justice in August over child privacy issues.
