President Trump stood before a crowd in Garden City, New York, on August 14 and delivered a message most politicians spend their careers avoiding: prices are going up, and you should be okay with it.
The ask? Accept higher costs at the pump as the price of keeping Iran’s nuclear ambitions in check. Trump called it a small sacrifice to protect against what he described as a “very evil country,” adding that he would not apologize for the economic toll.
Average US gasoline prices have climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, a roughly 29% increase compared to the same period last year.

The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply typically flows, has effectively been shut to crude shipments. On August 14, only two vessels transited the strait, and neither was carrying crude oil. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister underlined Tehran’s control over the chokepoint that same day.
Brent crude futures climbed about $1 per barrel on August 14, with a weekly gain tracking at roughly 6%.
Analysts estimate the broader economic fallout from the conflict could reach tens to hundreds of billions of dollars in additional household costs across the US.
The current crisis traces back to February 28, 2026, when joint US-Israeli military operations against Iran began. What followed was a familiar pattern in Middle Eastern conflicts: airstrikes, attempted ceasefires that collapsed, and a steady escalation that pulled energy markets into the blast radius.
Iran’s response centered on the leverage it has always held but rarely fully deployed: the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is only about 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, and Iran’s coastline runs along its northern edge.
For the average driver filling up a 15-gallon tank, the year-over-year increase translates to roughly $15 more per fill-up compared to last summer. Multiply that across 50 fill-ups a year and you’re looking at about $750 in additional annual fuel costs per vehicle. For a two-car household, that’s $1,500 that isn’t going to restaurants, retail, or savings.
Diesel prices, which typically move in tandem with gasoline, affect shipping costs for everything from groceries to building materials. Higher transportation costs tend to show up in consumer prices with a lag of four to eight weeks, meaning the full impact of the current oil shock may not register in official inflation data until early fall.
