Morocco jumped the gun. On September 10, Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, declared that the 2030 World Cup final would take place at the King Hassan II Stadium, a colossal new venue under construction near Casablanca in the city of Benslimane. One day later, FIFA issued a flat denial.

The global football governing body stated that no decisions regarding the final’s venue have been finalized, adding that such matters would be determined “in due course.”

A stadium built for a statement

The King Hassan II Stadium isn’t just another arena. With a planned seating capacity of 115,000, it’s designed to become the world’s largest football-specific venue. The project carries a price tag near $1B. As of May 2026, the stadium was reportedly around 30% complete, with an anticipated finish date sometime between 2027 and 2028.

Morocco, Portugal, and Spain are co-hosting the 2030 tournament, with three opening matches also scheduled in South America as a centennial nod to the first World Cup held in Uruguay in 1930. Among those three primary hosts, the question of who gets the final is the single most valuable piece of real estate in the entire event.

Spain isn’t backing down

Spain has its own compelling case. The country can point to two of the most iconic stadiums in world football: Real Madrid’s renovated Santiago Bernabeu and FC Barcelona’s rebuilt Camp Nou.

Spain’s sports minister has publicly stated that the country “deserved” the final, a word choice that suggests Madrid and Barcelona view this less as a competition and more as an entitlement. The ongoing negotiations between all three host nations and FIFA appear far from resolved.

For Morocco, hosting the final would carry significance well beyond football logistics. It would mark only the second time World Cup matches have been played on African soil, following South Africa’s landmark tournament in 2010.

The Infantino factor

This isn’t the first time the Morocco-final narrative has surfaced. Earlier media reports suggested that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had offered Morocco the final as a strategic move to secure African support for his re-election. FIFA dismissed those reports as “false and misleading.”

What to watch

The timeline matters here. With the stadium at roughly 30% completion and a projected finish no earlier than 2027, Morocco faces a practical constraint that Spain does not. The Bernabeu is already operational.

FIFA has given itself maximum flexibility by refusing to commit. The formal decision on the final venue could come months from now, or it could arrive alongside a broader package of venue assignments for the entire tournament.
