Four matches into the Premier League season and the firing speculation is already louder than the crowds at most grounds. ESPN’s Ryan O’Hanlon has introduced the “Hot Seat Index,” a ranking system that evaluates all 20 Premier League managers by their likelihood of getting sacked, and the results paint a grim picture for several high-profile names.

The timing isn’t arbitrary. Ten managers were sacked during the previous Premier League season, and another six were dismissed in the months that followed. That’s 16 managerial changes across a 20-team league in roughly a calendar year.

Who’s safe, who’s sweating

At the comfortable end of the spectrum sits Mikel Arteta, the longest-serving manager in the Premier League with a tenure exceeding four years at Arsenal. Arteta’s deep involvement in player recruitment and sustained success at the Emirates has made him essentially unsackable by current standards.

Half of the Premier League’s current managers have been in their roles for fewer than 200 days.

The index draws on a combination of adjusted goal differential, expected goals (xG), club histories, and early-season results to build its rankings from safest to most precarious.

At the dangerous end of the thermometer, three names stand out. Frank Lampard at Coventry City sits in the most perilous position of all, having collected zero points and zero goals through four matches.

Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham isn’t faring much better. Also winless and goalless, De Zerbi’s situation carries an extra layer of tension: Spurs have reportedly spent approximately $400 million on player acquisitions.

Álvaro Arbeloa rounds out the danger zone at Fulham with a single point to show for the opening month. Reports of internal player discontent have added fuel to an already smoldering situation. Betting markets have reportedly aligned with the Index’s assessment, placing Lampard, De Zerbi, and Arbeloa as the frontrunners for the next managerial sacking.

What the early data actually says

Lampard’s situation at Coventry feels particularly precarious because there’s no statistical silver lining to point to. Zero goals in four matches means the attack isn’t generating chances, or it’s generating chances and missing everything, or both.

Arbeloa at Fulham faces a different but equally tricky challenge. One point is survivable in raw mathematical terms, but reported unrest within the squad suggests that the dressing room is fracturing before the season has properly begun.

The xG-based analysis underlying the Index attempts to separate genuine underperformance from bad luck. If a team is creating quality chances but not converting, there’s reason for cautious optimism. If the underlying chance creation is poor, the problems are structural.
